Jon Kasbe, a rising senior at the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication, finished first in the multimedia individual national championship of the Hearst Journalism Awards.
From June 4-7, 29 finalists – all winners from 14 monthly Hearst competitions – participated in the annual Hearst Championships in San Francisco where they demonstrated their writing, photography, radio, television and multimedia skills in rigorous on-the-spot assignments.
The assignments were decided by media professionals who judged the finalists’ work throughout the year and at the championships. Kasbe’s winning entry in the multimedia features category “Make a noise if you can hear me,” was featured at Reesenews.org.
Kasbe received a $5,000 award.
