Melissa Abbey, the news director for the Reese News Lab, won first place in the feature writing competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards. Abbey is a senior at the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication and will receive a $2,600 scholarship for the winning article.

Abbey’s winning entry, From a cardboard box to loving arms, is the story of a couple who adopted an abandoned baby with severe birth defects.

By winning first place in the feature writing competition, Abbey qualifies to compete in the National Writing Championship in San Francisco to be held in June 2013.

There were 142 students from 76 universities who participated in the feature writing competition.

In the June 2012 national championship, Reese News Lab’s Jon Kasbe won first place in the multimedia category.
