We’re excited to have Steven King, a long-time friend of the Lab, with us this fall as the Interim Director of Reese News Lab.

King is an assistant professor of Interactive and Multimedia Journalism at UNC’s School of Media and Journalism. He is also the former Editor of Innovations and former Director of Video for The Washington Post.

At The Washington Post, King created multimedia stories as well as new business models. During his time there, he brought new forms of storytelling to the forefront and generated millions in new revenue for the company.

Here at the School of Media and Journalism, King has trained students in design thinking, interactive story-telling, and design and development for emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality.

Throughout his career, King has worked to integrate computer science concepts, human centered design, and storytelling. We’ve benefited from his experiences first-hand at the Lab. During the life of Reese News Lab, King has been a valuable supporter of our projects and great guide to our students. In  2014, the Lab collaborated with his startup, FilmSync, to develop new applications for his second screen technology.

This semester, he’ll be leading our interns as we improve on Capitol Hound, bring Legal Stats to market, and develop local media uses for virtual reality.

Like the rest of us at Reese News Lab, King is passionate about bringing new technologies and viable business solutions to journalism. His expertise in journalism and human centered design are a great boon to the Lab. We know that we’ll do great things with King on the team.
