News on the go: Field notes on storytelling for mobile devices

By Sara Peach and the staff of the Reese News Lab

Published by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UNC-Chapel Hill, this pioneering e-book offers tips for journalists on adapting their work to the new generation of mobile news consumers.

In the summer of 2012, the school’s Reese News Lab launched a mobile-oriented news site called, covering political issues in North Carolina. To produce the site, a team of 10 students had to figure out how to adapt their work to smartphones screens just a few inches wide.

Mindful of the challenges that the media industry is facing, the students and lab leaders took detailed notes on how they developed and created content for the site. Then, they created this book of best practices for other news professionals and students. With chapters on how to write, create videos, and design graphics and interactive tools for mobile devices, this book is your guide to engaging 21st-century audiences.
