Wake, Durham and Orange Counties all have more fake ID busts than the state average. Interestingly, each one of these counties is home to a major NC College or University. Yet, in one of these three counties, you are four times as likely to face a charge of “possession/manufacturing a fraudulent ID” than in the other two.
Orange County, NC, had a rate of .016 fake ID busts per capita in 2012. That means that 1.6 percent Orange County residents were cited with this misdemeanor offense. This is four times higher than the rate per capita in Wake and Durham counties (.004).
Fake IDs are notoriously common among college students. However, it is difficult to say if fake IDs are simply more prevalent in the large town of Chapel Hill than in Raleigh or Durham, or if Orange County police are citing offenders more frequently.
