Audience Engagement Statistics Across Social, Video, and Live Media

Key audience engagement statistics from Meta, YouTube, Threads, TikTok, and live digital media, with dates and geographies made explicit.

Audience engagement now spans daily platform use, connected-TV viewing, short-form discovery, podcasts, music, and live conversation. The figures below show how large those behaviors were in the reported periods, while keeping each platform’s measurement and geography explicit.

Platform reach and daily activity

Meta’s Family of Apps reported a large and steadily growing daily audience during 2024. Meta reported 3.24 billion family daily active people on average for March 2024. It also reported that family daily active people increased 7% year over year in the first quarter of 2024. These figures come from “Meta Reports First Quarter 2024 Results.”

The same release reported a 20% year-over-year increase in ad impressions delivered across the Family of Apps in Q1 2024. Average price per ad increased 6% year over year. These are advertising-delivery measures, so they describe the commercial activity surrounding engagement rather than a direct measure of time spent or interaction rate.

Meta reported 3.27 billion family daily active people on average for June 2024. Family daily active people increased 7% year over year in Q2 2024, according to “Meta Reports Second Quarter 2024 Results.” In that quarter, ad impressions increased 10% year over year and average price per ad increased 10% year over year.

By September 2024, Meta reported 3.29 billion family daily active people on average. The figure was 5% higher year over year in Q3 2024. The quarterly release, “Meta Reports Third Quarter 2024 Results,” also reported that ad impressions increased 7% year over year and average price per ad increased 11% year over year.

Meta also reported Q3 2024 revenue of $40.59 billion, net income of $15.69 billion, and diluted earnings per share of $6.03. Those financial measures provide company context, but they should not be treated as audience-engagement measures themselves.

Connected-TV and viewing behavior

YouTube’s audience activity increasingly includes television screens. YouTube reported that viewers globally watched more than 1 billion hours of YouTube content on TVs every day. In the United States, Nielsen reported YouTube as the number-one streaming platform by watch time for 12 consecutive months. These claims appear in “Nielsen crowns YouTube #1 Streamer in America 12 months straight!”

The device shift is visible among creators as well as viewers. YouTube said the number of top creators receiving the majority of their watch time on TVs increased by more than 400% in the three years referenced by that release. Kinigra Deon had more than 70% of her viewership come from connected TVs in 2023, while HopeScope saw a 172% increase in TV watch time in 2023.

YouTube reported that sports-content watch time on TV grew by more than 30% year over year in 2024. It also said the share of videos uploaded in 4K was up by more than 35% year over year in the same 2024 recap. Together, these figures point to a viewing environment in which screen size, production quality, and event programming can shape how audiences consume digital video.

Viewing behavior also includes user control over playback speed. YouTube said users saved an average of more than 900 years of video time per day when watching at faster speeds. When viewers changed playback speed, speed-up playback was used more than 85% of the time. Among non-default speeds, 1.5x was the most common, 2x was second, and 1.25x was third. These results are from “Need for Speed: How YouTubers watch video using playback speeds.”

Short-form video and discovery

Short-form viewing is another major route to audience attention. YouTube Shorts averaged more than 70 billion daily views. More than 25% of creators in the YouTube Partner Program were earning money through YouTube Shorts, according to “One year in, revenue sharing on Shorts shows how your passion on YouTube pays off.” The two figures measure different sides of the format: audience volume and creator monetization reach.

TikTok reported that its community spent 50% of its time watching videos longer than one minute. That measure matters because short-form platforms are not limited to only the shortest clips; a substantial share of reported viewing time went to videos above the one-minute threshold. The figure comes from “Introducing the New Creator Rewards Program.”

TikTok’s reported music-discovery statistics show how engagement can extend beyond the platform. U.S. TikTok users were 74% more likely than the average short-form video user to discover and share new music on social and short-form video platforms. TikTok and Luminate also reported that 84% of songs entering the Billboard Global 200 in 2024 went viral on TikTok first.

The same TikTok and Luminate report said the Add to Music App feature generated more than 1 billion track saves since launching in 2024. U.S. music listeners who use TikTok were 68% more likely to use a paid-for music-streaming subscription than the U.S. general population. These are U.S.-specific comparisons and should not be generalized to all TikTok users or all music listeners.

Podcasts, music, and participation

YouTube’s podcast audience reached a reported global scale. YouTube said viewers watched more than 400 million hours of podcasts monthly on living-room devices in 2024. It also said it had more than 1 billion monthly active viewers of podcast content as of January 2025. The source for both figures is “Drop the mic: Celebrating 1 billion monthly podcast users on YouTube.” The first measure is viewing hours on a device category; the second is monthly active viewers, so they are not interchangeable.

Long-form event viewing can also create exceptional bursts of attention. During Paris 2024, YouTube viewers watched more than 40 billion minutes of Olympics content, equal to more than 650 million hours, according to “How the Paris Olympics played out on YouTube.” The measurement covers YouTube viewing of Olympics content during the Paris 2024 event and is not a general daily viewing average.

YouTube Music and YouTube Premium passed 100 million members, including trials, in January 2024. The figure is from “Thank you for 100 million.” Because trials are included, the membership count should not be read as a count of fully paid subscriptions.

The platform’s television and podcast figures illustrate several distinct engagement signals: daily watch volume, monthly audience size, event-specific consumption, and membership totals. For media innovators, those measures answer different questions about reach, repeat use, and the settings in which audiences choose to watch or listen.

Threads and recommendation-led engagement

Threads reported 175 million monthly active users in July 2024, in “Threads, 1st anniversary record release.” In the same month, Threads was adding more than 1 million new sign-ups per day, according to 2024 Q3 Meta earnings coverage on Threads. Monthly active users and daily sign-ups describe different stages of audience growth: one is an active-user stock measured over a month, while the other is an acquisition flow.

A single creator example shows how quickly attention can follow a high-profile arrival. Ananya Panday gained more than 1.3 million followers in the first few hours after joining Threads. She had more than 24 million followers on Instagram. These figures are from “Now, Ananya Panday Engages With Her Fan Community On Threads.” They describe one public figure’s audience and are not representative platform averages.

Meta’s 2024 Q3 earnings coverage on Threads said AI-based feed and video recommendations increased time spent on Facebook by 8% in 2024 and increased time spent on Instagram by 6% in 2024. The figures identify reported changes in time spent associated with AI-based recommendations; they do not provide absolute minutes or establish that the same change occurred for every user.

For journalism and media innovation, the distinction is useful. A recommendation system can be evaluated through changes in time spent, while a community launch can be evaluated through sign-ups, active users, followers, or actions taken. Those metrics describe different engagement pathways and should remain separate in reporting.

Live communities and sports audiences

TikTok LIVE reported more than 100 million creators went LIVE on TikTok in 2024. More than 46 million creators started their LIVE journey on TikTok in 2024. The figures come from “Celebrating the Power of Community and Creativity on TikTok LIVE in 2024.” The first figure describes creators who went LIVE; the second describes creators starting their live participation during the year.

TikTok LIVE also reported 269 billion chats in 2024. In the same source, 250,000 creators were reported to have doubled their income year over year on TikTok LIVE. Chat volume is an interaction count, while the income figure describes a creator-outcome group; neither is a direct measure of average audience size.

Sports content generated additional second-screen and off-platform behavior. TikTok reported that 85% of fans used TikTok as a second-screen experience during live events, and 90% of fans took at least one off-platform action after viewing sports content on TikTok. The same TikTok GamePlan launch coverage reported that more than 60 million sports creators were already active on TikTok.

Engagement differed by the type of account or contributor. Content from official accounts drove 64% engagement in TikTok sports content, creators drove 63%, and fan-generated content drove 60%. TikTok also reported that fans were 42% more likely to tune in to live matches after watching sports content on TikTok. These sports figures describe reported audience behavior around TikTok content and live events; they are not general engagement rates for every TikTok category.

Across these measures, audience engagement is best understood as a set of related signals rather than one universal number: people reached daily, hours watched on particular devices, content discovered, conversations created, followers gained, and actions taken after viewing. The measurement period and geography attached to each figure determine what comparison is meaningful.
